About peria

Peria — bitter gourd — is one of the few vegetables bought deliberately for the thing most produce is graded to avoid. The bitterness is the point, and it varies with how mature the fruit is when it is cut. Picked young, the flesh is firm, the texture crisp, and the bitterness clean. Left a day too long on the vine, it turns coarse, the skin starts to yellow, and the seeds harden.

That makes timing matter more here than with most crops. At Sendayan Farm our pickers cut on a short cycle rather than clearing a row in one pass. It is slower, but it keeps the fruit in a consistent maturity window instead of sending a mix of young and overgrown in the same load.

Growing and handling

We grow peria on trellis under an AB Mix fertigation programme. Training the vine upward keeps the fruit hanging straight and off the ground, which matters for a ridged skin that marks easily and shows soil staining. Feeding through the drip line gives steadier growth through the fruiting phase than a granular schedule.

Fruit is cut with a short stem and out of the field the same morning. Bitter gourd loses moisture faster than its skin suggests, and a day of poor handling shows as softening or wrinkling at the ends. Supply is bulk, with no individual packing — it keeps waste and handling cost down for commercial buyers.

Grading

We grade on length, straightness and skin condition, supplying Grade A and B. Buyers slicing for restaurant service want even, straight fruit for consistent presentation. Buyers cooking it down for herbal soup or bulk preparation can use a wider range. Tell us how you process it and we will supply to match.

Ordering

This crop is currently out of season. The next harvest is scheduled for December 2026 and we are taking advance enquiries now. Minimum order is 100kg.

There is no published price. The figure depends on whether you collect or want delivery within Seremban, on volume, and on payment terms — one headline number would be wrong for most buyers reading it. Tell us what you need and we will quote against it.

Self-collection at Sendayan Farm gets you the freshest handover. Add this to an enquiry or call us. For a standing order, talk to us about your delivery days in advance so the picking cycle can be planned around them.
